Churches are always one of the first things I think of when I hear architecture. They always have beautiful windows and entrances that make them unique and different from most buildings. The big doors and windows as well as the height of the building make everything feel important which was what I wanted to represent because emotionally for a lot of people religion is a big part of their lives. Spring also just happened to finally be coming around so having the green of the trees in this picture I think gave it some of the color it needed because the building was so brown. I also like the small amount of the blue tint there was in the windows that gave it a little more color as well.
The law quad is one of the most interesting places in Ann Arbor in terms of architecture that I could think of. Each building has so many interesting elements that make it different from another building that could be right next to it. They have a variety of shapes, heights, and nature surrounding them that make each one of them interesting. They all also have lots of history and age in them which I wanted to make sure I captured so each building had character. For example the building on the far left above I shot looking up at the sky and keeping the colors dark so it looked more like a tall castle because that's one thing all these buildings make me think of so I tried to establish that in that specific picture.
I picked the art museum as one of my locations because there were two different areas I really wanted to photograph. The main entrance has a sky window, columns, and you can look up on to the next floor. One common theme for these photos is I like to find patterns in the buildings. Such as the middle of the building with glass railings where you can look down on the floors. I liked the contrast of the white, glass, and wood, it gave the picture both white and yellow tones. The pops of color from the poster art on the walls also gave the picture more complexity so it wasn't just floors and walls this helped make the picture more interesting. Editing was also a lot more fun so I could bring out the whites from the wall and the other colors in the room to make it more clean and bright. The lines in the building were also sharp which helped to bring out the smaller details of the picture like the art, patterns in the architecture, and the art.
Stairs used to be something I wouldn't associate with architecture because I would generally think about the outside of buildings. They however do have repetition I them in the steps which guides your eyes up the picture that I liked. When I looked at the curve of the railing and how they spiral up was something I thought made them unique compared to other stairs of buildings. I didn't like how everything at first was brown it didn't have any feeling to it which is why I edited this in black and white. It gave the picture more emotion and I think highlighted the shape of them better. The light of the window also brought in some white that helped to balance the picture out so it wasn't all gray and black.
The entrance to the law quad was another thing I wanted to capture. This was another photo where I liked the repetition in the arches made by the outside of the building and the columns that helped to continue this theme. The white was nice to work with because it's a more monochromatic picture but this helps to highlight the lines and patterns of the building. Making the inside of this entrance darker made the photo feel more mysterious which I like because it gives people something to think about after looking at it. The light peeking through on the inside on the ground however brought back some of the white from the outside which helped bring the two colors/ ideas of the picture together.
